Comprised of artists from four different parts of the world鈥攙iolinists Dmitri Pogorelov (Russia) and Francois Henkins (South Africa), violist Ai Ishida (Japan) and Elmhurst native and resident cellist Jean Hatmaker鈥攖he group presents a global perspective in showcasing its music in new and artistic ways.
Also performing with Kontras will be Northeastern faculty artists on clarinet and on guitar.
Kontras, which means 鈥渃ontrasts鈥 in the Afrikaans language, is currently in residence with Western Michigan University, the Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. The Chicago-based group was founded while the members were a part of the Chicago Civic Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble is expected to release its highly anticipated debut album, 鈥淥rigins,鈥 a collection of quartets from Russia, South Africa, Japan and the United States, on MSR Records this year.
This performance is a part of the Jewel Box Series, an eight-concert professional performing arts series presented by Northeastern鈥檚 Office of Cultural Events.
