Dr. John Sargon Albazi Student Research and Creative Activities Symposium
Help to raise funds to institutionalize the NEIU Student Research and Creative Activities Symposium and name it after its founder Dr. John Sargon Albazi
Twenty-nine years ago, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Dr. John Sargon Albazi saw a need and created a student symposium at Թ with five goals:
- To encourage students to participate in research and creative activities and to pursue graduate study;
- To provide undergraduate and graduate students who are engaged in research and creative activities an opportunity to interact with each other and present their work before an audience of their peers;
- To promote and strengthen collaboration in research and creative activities among students and faculty;
- To enhance communication in areas of student research and creative activities among the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business and Management, Graduate Studies and Research, and the Goodwin College of Education; and
- To provide a forum for highlighting the research accomplishments and creative activities at Թ.
Thousands of students have benefited from this exercise in research and creativity, going on to pursue advanced degrees and becoming leaders in their industries. Today, the Symposium hosts hundreds of Northeastern students annually, providing a platform for their original research and creative work, and impacting their educational and career journeys.
“[The Symposium] has changed the University’s traditional identity as a teaching institute, to a teaching and research institute,” said Dr. Albazi. "The Annual Student Symposium has contributed to the development of a research culture at NEIU to the extent that it has become a component of the strategic planning of the University.”
Your contribution of any size will not only add additional resources to maintain and grow this impressive annual event, but also help invest in the possibility of attaining some long-term wishes Dr. Albazi has had for the Symposium and Northeastern:
- To establish a formal center for student research and creative activities
- To build a union among the more than 1,000 alumni who presented their research work or creative activities at the Symposium
- To expand the Symposium to include surrounding high schools, colleges and universities
“I can’t say enough about the positive impact John Albazi’s work has had on our students. Having that experience has helped many get into graduate school and, in some cases, changed their mind to make them want to go to graduate school. NEIU students and faculty certainly owe John a debt of gratitude for all his work.”

The NEIU Student Research & Creative Activities Symposium is ranked 8th among 50 universities nationally. Your contribution to this fund will help thousands more to be inspired through education.
