WHO WE ARE: The Center for Genocide and Human Rights Research in Africa and the Diaspora (GHRAD) is a center composed of faculty working to promote the awareness and prevention of genocides and mass atrocities in Africa.

VISION: The GHRAD center will be one of the most prolific international resource centers for genocide and human rights research in the Midwest region and a magnet for those wishing to study, research, and become more aware of genocide and human rights abuses in Africa and the Diaspora.

MISSION: GHRAD brings awareness to the topics of genocide and human rights abuses in Africa and the Diaspora to as many people as possible. As genocides in Africa are not discussed as much as they should be, GHRAD’s aim is to bring this topic into classrooms and engage students, faculty, and the public in deep discussions about its causes and solutions for prevention.

GOALS

Our Goals consist of but are not limited to:

  • Hosting annual conferences bringing renowned scholars in the field alongside with other researchers and educators.
  • Having a graduate program in Genocide and Human Rights Research in Africa and Diaspora.
  • Providing internship and other learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at NEIU.
  • Providing field-based research experiences and education for graduate students interested in genocide and human rights in Africa and the Diaspora.

UPCOMING EVENTS: GHRAD center will be holding its inaugural and eighth conference on March 3 & 4, 2022. Our theme will be Agency, Ethics, and Everyday Heroes: Strategies for the Prevention of Genocide and Human Rights Abuses in Africa and the Diaspora. Our keynote speaker will be the world-renowned scholar Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.
