GROWING UP WITH BIG HAIR by

Directed by Guest Artist Emilio Williams

Workshopped in thINKtank 2025 in partnership with Bramble Theatre, this piece continues our commitment to developing works through thINKtank and seeing them fully realized on our stage! Emilio returns to Stage Center following his own plays being workshopped in thINKtank with Leslie a few years ago.

Based on a true story, Growing Up with Big Hair is a coming-of-age dramedy about a young Chicago Latina girl in the 70's, who's immigrant father dreams of moving West - where the grass is greener and the people, Whiter. When the family moves to an all-White Chicago neighborhood, Anna finds herself wrestling with her identity, as much as she wrestles with her hair. With a little laughter and a lot of Dippity-Do, she struggles to find her place in-between. When she discovers her family's secret on her 18th birthday, she is finally confronted with the truth of who she really is.

A traveling soothsayer, Asim, wanders into the courtyard of Cleopatra’s palace and starts chatting with the queen’s handmaiden, Charmian. He promises to read her fortune. As the unhappy future of the court begins to unfold, this soothsayer soon becomes a witness, then finally a participant in the last days of Cleopatra and Antony.
